Sprouting Out Initiative

Sprouting Out Teen- made Organic Soaps!

Sprouting Out is a teen-led initiative started by the Concordia Place Emerging Leader program teens in 2010. This innovative learning approach integrates service to the community with program curriculum. The teens address community needs, learn civic responsibility and develop meaningful leadership and workplace skills through the development and implementation of program components.

As the Sprouting Out initiative continues to successfully expand, the teens are developing new program components geared towards the formation of a sustainable business model—the selling of teen-made and teen-grown products.

Soaps, Seedlings and Worms—the teens have launched into producing, growing and selling these three new products. With the help and guidance of professional experts, the teens rotate leadership roles in soap-making, vermicomposting and seedling production. Every teen has the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in each service-learning area. Through this entrepreneurship the teens are building life skills such as financial literacy, money management, customer service, sustainable and responsible business practices, and academic and career skills.

Farmers’ Markets, Nutrition Workshops and Gardens— for the past two years, the teens have provided local residents access to fresh, sustainable produce through hosting seasonal monthly farmers' markets. They led workshops on nutrition for area students and they planted and maintained two teen gardens within the neighborhood.

The new Sprouting Out products will be available at our 2012 farmers’ markets!
